I see healthier food in our family's future... what about yours?

Happy New Year! I can't believe we're already starting another one. Wow.
So inspired by recent events in my life, including but not limited to; the article that Jimmy Moore wrote on the sugar free school , a friend being diagnosed with diabetes, my mother-in-law having severely high blood pressure, and the disgusting food fest that is the period between Thanksgiving and Christmas- I decided that I was going to take the leap.
For the past year I've been very careful to feed my family healthier foods. They like them for the most part, and don't complain much. But those "once in a while" things became way-too-often things. I know that everyone splurges a little around the holidays, but it was getting ridiculous!!!
When my 4-year-old son can't button his pants anymore, something needs to happen!!
So I decided our home is going to be a sugar-free zone. I would say 24 hours a day, but daddy balked a little at that one (don't worry, we'll win him over). So between the hours of 7 am and 6 pm, there will be no sugar in our house. If daddy brings home a little something, then it's up to him, but no more in the daytime for us. I was reading about the school that did the sugar-free thing and I thought "our home IS our school". When I told the kids this there was a little "awwww" and "oh, man!" and probably a few thoughts that I was the meanest mom ever. But I gave them a week's notice and we read the Berenstain Bears book "Too Much Junk Food" (A GREAT way to make it fun for kids to see how important it is to nourish our bodies with the right foods) and then today we kicked it all off by throwing out our leftover sugar stuff from the holidays- some pastries, some candy, some brown sugar. GONE! I showed them some of the healthy stuff they could snack on, things they already like, like almonds, cheese, carrots, raisins, apples and popcorn. I think they will live.
I know some people think oh, no, I'm setting them up to be sugar fiends when they're older, and I hope I'm not. I'm trying to give them good habits now while I have any influence over their choices. They understand the hows and whys of what we eat. They might be a little grumpy for a while, but I know this is a good choice for us. They will live, we will all be healthy, and later on, maybe they won't have the health problems that us adults suffer from.
Healthy new year, everyone! Let's do what's good for our bodies (and our kids) today.
