Ever look at other people's grocery carts while you're shopping? Why do we do that? Or is it just me? Is it so we don't feel bad about buying the junk we have in ours? Or is it so we can turn up our noses because what we have in our cart is healthier? I know I have personally wanted to cry when I see a person behind me in line who is very overweight unloading their white bread, chips, Little Debbies, chips, pasta and soda. Especially when they have a child with them. I feel badly because I was where they are and the solution to the weight problem is so simple.

So what do you put into your grocery cart as a health-conscious low-carber with children? First, follow the common suggestion to shop on the outer isles of the store- that's where you'll find the fresh, whole, and frozen things that are vital to healthy eating.

Here are some of the things that are absolutely necessary in my cart:

  • Fresh broccoli, green peppers, apples (kids)
  • Ground beef, pork, or whatever is on sale
  • All-beef hot dogs
  • Eggs
  • Blocks of natural cheese, string cheese
  • Yogurt
  • Bags of frozen vegetables
  • Frozen chicken
  • Low-carb bread (my favorite for the kids is Sara Lee)
  • Peanut butter
  • Cans of veggies, olives, tuna and chicken
  • Vienna sausages ( I hate these but the kids like them)

Tip: When you're in Georgia, a grocery cart is a "buggy"... if you say otherwise, people will look at you like you're a foreigner!
