This summer is shaping up to be a hot one filled with chart-topping blockbusters. Here is a quick list of the movies sure to bring in the big bucks this summer:

May 1  X-men Origins: Wolverine: This film brings Hugh Jackman back as the ferocious character Wolverine. The series takes a slight detour as it brings the story of how the character Wolverine came to be. You could say this is a prequel to the previous X-men films to give fans the background of one of the most popular comic characters of all-time. Potentially the most exciting feature is the addition of the Gambit character. Many fans were disappointed that he was left out of the original trilogy. Look for this one to bring in a couple hundred million and make the Top 100 domestic grossing films list.

May 8  Star Trek: Keeping in line with the theme of prequels, Star Trek also gives viewers a look at where these iconic characters came from. James T. Kirk, Spock, Scotty, Bones, Sulu and the whole crew are back…and younger! Zachary Quinto plays the younger Spock. You may be familiar with his work as Sylar on the hit television show Heroes. There are a few other up-and-coming actors, as well as some fresh faces, rounding out the rest of the cast in a film that is sure to blow most everyone away. It’s hard to predict how the hardcore “trekkies” will take to the special effects driven prequel. Regardless, this one is a must-see of 2009!

May 15  Angels & Demons: What? Does this make three prequels in a row? Angels & Demons has Tom Hanks returning as his character Robert Langdon from the 2006 film The DaVinci Code. Both films are adaptations of bestselling Dan Brown novels by the same names. Langdon must traverse caverns and catacombs, search through churches and cathedrals, and often run for his life as he tries to uncover the truth about the Illuminati and the Catholic Church before it’s too late! Even if you’re unfamiliar with Dan Brown’s novels or the first film, you should still enjoy this dramatic thriller.

May 21  Terminator Salvation: Christian Bale is one of Hollywood’s hottest actors right now (in every sense of the word) and has the starring role of John Conner in the latest installment of the Terminator series. This one takes place in the future, as John Connor must lead the human resistance in a constant battle against the machines. The previous films in this series took place in the past, during John’s childhood. With millions of dollars of special effects, Christian Bale in the lead role, and a tried and true franchise, this film has potential to be the hit of the summer.

June 24  Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen: The original cast from the first Transformers film from 2007 all return for the highly anticipated sequel. A fun addition to the original cast is Rainn Wilson, from the popular television series The Office. You don’t really have to know much about the plot to give you reason to see this film. It will be chalk full of more good guys versus bad guys with a plethora of special effects. This one is a no-brainer must-see of 2009!

July 15  Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince: Unless you purposely cut yourself off from all things media or mainstream, you are aware of the Harry Potter series of books and films. Hogwarts is no longer a safe place in this sequel, and Harry must team up with some old friends to prepare for the showdown with Voldemort. Meanwhile, as hormones wreak havoc on these teenagers, love begins to distract everyone. Will these distractions prove too much to overcome, or will Harry find a way to defeat evil once and for all?

August 7  G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra: This film has not had nearly as much advertising as some of the other summer blockbusters, but look for this one to be a surprise hit. Here we have the iconic action figures and cartoon characters from the eighties brought to life in a live action film. Stephen Sommers directs this one, so look for the action and comedy to be similar to his earlier The Mummy series. If done correctly, and if Sommers sticks to the style of the original show, this could be another surprise hit of the summer. However, if too many liberties are taken, hardcore G.I. Joe fans could criticize it harshly. Whatever the outcome, it’s bound to be an action-packed, enjoyable summer flick.

This has by no means been an exhaustive list of the up-coming summer movies. Instead, this is just a quick list of the films that are sure to fill up the theaters all summer long. Look to future postings for reviews of these films and more previews of up-coming films.
