“A New Evil Awakens” “See how the legend of The Scorpion King began”
The # 8 film on the Top 10 Worst Movie Sequels of All Time list is The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor and The Scorpion King 2: Rise of a Warrior. Ok, it can be argued that these are two different series, but since The Mummy series really spawned the Scorpion King series, it’s close enough. This is one of the best examples of just not knowing when to pull the plug. The Mummy and The Mummy Returns were entertaining films. However, it was pretty clear that the series did not have what it takes to go beyond those two films. The first Scorpion King film was decent and really worthwhile just to see Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in his first lead role in a feature film. However, there was no reason to go not one, but two more films beyond these first three. Both The Mummy and The Scorpion King series' filmmakers thought, “Let’s go one more, see what happens.” Well, congratulations. What happened was you ended up on this list.
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor sounded like a good idea. Bring back most of the original cast and add Jet Li as a villain. It worked out ok in Lethal Weapon 4, with a slightly better outcome. The problem was the writers seemed to just run out of new things to add to the series. The whole time you’re watching it you just think, “Yeah, seen this in the first two…give us something fresh.” The acting didn’t exactly get worse, but since it wasn’t stellar to begin with, the characters also got old and tired. How many one-liners can we take from Brendan Fraser in a single film series? The movie series just didn’t end when it should have and with nothing new in this third film, fans were just tired of it.
The Scorpion King 2 was just a bad idea, plain and simple. The character’s back-story was fine for a single origin tale. So, why did they make an origin tale of an origin tale? Not to mention Michael Copon as the young Mathayus (who would become the Scorpion King) and Randy Couture as Sargon, leader of the army, and eventual Emperor. It must have been a bet between casting directors to see who could come up with the worst combination of actors for a single movie.
I would rather use a steel wool Brillo pad and bleach to scrub my eyeballs than have to watch these movies again.
