Romantic Comedy
Catch and Release – Here is a nice romantic comedy starring Jennifer Garner and Timothy Olyphant (Live Free or Die Hard and Hitman). The story follows Garner’s character as she must deal with the loss of her husband and the secrets that she finds out about him after his death. Meanwhile, her late husband’s best friend, whom she previously despised, shows her compassion and understanding during her time of grief and the pair soon realize that they may just be right for each other. Don’t expect to be blown away by the story or the acting, but as far as romantic comedies go, there are a lot more out there far worse than this one. That may not sound like a glowing recommendation, but if you like the genre and haven’t seen it, check it out.
Fever Pitch – This is another slightly better than average romantic comedy due to the very good acting by Jimmy Fallon and Drew Barrymore. The story is unique enough to separate it from the “cookie cutter” formula that so many romantic comedies follow. Jimmy Fallon’s character is a diehard Red Sox fan, and when he begins dating Barrymore’s character he must choose between the two great loves of his life, his girl or his team! This one is a solid rental in this genre.
Action
Assault on Precinct 13 – This is a remake of a 1976 film by the same title. The plot has one of Detroit’s oldest police stations, Precinct 13, put in charge of housing a notorious crime lord and several other unsavory characters as a snowstorm on New Year’s Eve prohibits the transport bus from reaching its real destination, a high security facility. The station is set to close for good the next day and is run by a skeleton crew on its final night. During the night several gunman attempt to break in and kill the crime boss. When this first attack is thwarted, it becomes obvious that others will follow. The cops have no choice but to team up with the criminals if they all want to survive the night. The cast in the film was well chosen and includes Ethan Hawke, Lawrence Fishburne, John Leguizamo, Maria Bello and Jeffery Atkins. This is a well-done action film that blurs the lines between good and evil.
Bad Boys I & II – Well, most of you have undoubtedly heard of these two films. Bad Boys and Bad Boys II star Will Smith and Martin Lawrence in a couple of the best “buddy cop” movies since the Lethal Weapon films; though the Bad Boys movies seem to have more action and witty banter (sorry Mel, but congrats on baby # 8!). If you have never heard of these two flicks there isn’t a whole lot to say except: Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, great dialogue, lots of action, awesome movies! It would be nice to see someone make Bad Boys III since both Smith and Lawrence could really use a hit right about now (although Seven Pounds was excellent). If you haven’t seen these, you definitely should. If you already have, watch them again…they are just that good!
