At the number 4 spot on the “total box office revenue” list is Kathy Bates. Kathleen Doyle Bates was born on June 28, 1948 in Memphis, Tennessee. Although Kathy is a very talented actress, she has never been a huge box office draw. The sole reason she made this list, and quite high on it, was the fact that she played a supporting role in Titanic, the # 1 all-time domestic grossing film that took in over $600 million. Not even The Dark Knight at $533 million came close to breaking that record. Being in Titanic accounts for over 37% of her career box office revenue. Is that fair? Maybe not, but this list is based solely on total box office revenue and she was a valuable part of that esteemed piece of movie history.

In 1970, Kathy moved to New York City to pursue her acting career. Her film debut came the next year with a small role in Taking Off. She wrote and performed the song “And Even Horses Had Wings” for that film. In 1976 she had her Off-Broadway debut appearing in “Vanities.” 1980 was the year Bates hit the stages of Broadway in the show “Goodbye Fidel.” The next few years she remained on stage, appearing in several other Broadway and Off-Broadway shows. She also had a few parts on television series and made-for-TV movies. Her breakout role came in 1990 when she starred in the film Misery based on a Stephen King novel by the same name. The next year she had another successful role in the movie Fried Green Tomatoes. Returning to the realm of Stephen King, Bates starred in 1995’s Dolores Claiborne, also based on a King novel by the same name. Kathy showed us her funny side in the 1998 comedy hit The Waterboy. Most recently, she starred in The Day the Earth Stood Still and Revolutionary Road, both from 2008. There is no doubt that Kathy Bates is the most seasoned veteran on this Top 10 list. Her vast experience and classical training in the theater shows through in every role she takes from the most dramatic to the most comical. She may not be the biggest draw at the box office, but she is certainly one of the most talented actresses of her generation.

# 4 Kathy Bates

Total box office revenue of her films: $1.61 billion

Total number of films*: 37

Average per film box office revenue: $43.5 million

Return to Top 10 list.

* This does not count cameos, small voice work, or movies that omitted gross earnings
