At the number 7 spot on the “total box office revenue” list is Drew Barrymore. Drew Blythe Barrymore was born on February 22, 1975 in Los Angeles, California. Drew had some very famous relatives. Her grandfather, John Barrymore, was a famous thespian of both stage and screen in the 1920s and 1930s. He was known as “The Great Profile.” Drew’s grandmother, Dolores Costello, was a well-known actress in silent films from the same time period. Dolores’s sister, Helene Costello was also in silent films. Drew had another great-aunt, Ethel Barrymore, who won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Lionel Barrymore, Drew’s great-uncle, won an Oscar for Best Actor. Both of Drew’s great-grandfathers were also very popular stage actors. It’s not hard to guess why Drew decided to get into show business.

Drew Barrymore’s first film appearance was a small role in the movie Altered States in 1980. The same year she played Leslie Bogart as a child in the TV movie Bogie. She was just 5 years old when appearing in these films. Even at the age of 7, Drew was teaming up with the big names in Hollywood, playing Gertie in Spielberg’s E.T., the Extra-Terrestrial. At nine years old, she got her first title role in Firestarter. Is such fame normal for such a young child? Perhaps not. The next few years, beginning when she was still just nine years old, Drew began drinking, smoking marijuana and using cocaine. In 1989 she was institutionalized in a rehabilitation clinic after attempting suicide. At the age of 15, Drew filed papers and was emancipated from her parents. Her first starring role came in the 1992 film Poison Ivy. After overcoming her personal demons, Drew Barrymore has become one of Hollywood’s leading ladies starring in films like: the Charlie’s Angels movies, several hit comedies with Adam Sandler, Never Been Kissed and Riding in Cars with Boys. Though Drew has been known mostly as a comedic actor, she has stepped out of this genre on a few occasions with success. She should be a pillar of hope for anyone facing dark times. She has proven the old adage, “When you hit rock bottom, the only way to go is up.” From a drug-addicted preteen, to A-list movie queen, Drew Barrymore has seen it all, done it all, and conquered it all!
