Morgan Freeman

At the number 5 spot on the “total box office revenue” list is Morgan Freeman. Morgan was born on June 1, 1937 in Memphis, Tennessee. His education beyond high school consisted of Los Angeles Community College.

Freeman was an actor from the time he started walking. His first lead role was in 1945 at age 8 in a school play. Four years later, at the age of 12, he won a statewide drama competition. In 1955 he chose not to accept a scholarship to Jackson State University. Why? He decided to serve in the Air Force instead. As with many actors from his generation, Morgan started his career on stage in shows like “The Niggerlovers” and an all-black cast of “Hello, Dolly!” His film debut was as the character Afro in the 1971 movie Who Says I Can’t Ride a Rainbow. In 1986 he starred in the Pulitzer Prize-winning Off-Broadway show “Driving Miss Daisy.” The movie adaptation would come 3 years later. His first starring film role was in the 1989 movie Lean on Me. With a career so full of excellent performances, it is virtually impossible to nail down Freeman’s “breakout” role. One might guess that it would be in Lean on Me, or Driving Miss Daisy. Maybe it came in 1994 when he received his second Best Actor Oscar nomination for his part in The Shawshank Redemption.
