Graduation
An Examiner graduates from MMI

As an ex-teacher of history it will be interesting to see how history regards the last year we have lived through. Many pundits have already started calling it the Great Recession and it will be interesting to see how that label stands the test of time. It has also been an interesting year for the us. Just as the economy was beginning to show signs of tanking I quit my secure job of a decade and moved from California to Phoenix to train for a new career at Motorcycle Mechanics Institute. (MMI)

I spent my days training, studying and anxiously watching the news while the bank account inexorably dwindled toward the red. Ah, but the magic of motorcycling, even with very little money the therapy and adventure of two-wheeled travel remained available. Additionally there has been the added pleasure of sharing the experiences with Examiner readers.

Saying goodbye to Road Runner Land

Now, having  just graduated from MMI I had the good fortune of being hired at a shop in the delightful town of Santa Fe, New Mexico. As one might imagine this whole business of graduating and getting a household with three pets ready to move explains my somewhat lengthy absence from these pages. But with a little help from our friends, and some professional movers, we got everything packed up and made the trek across the high desert to our new home.

It is interesting how many different faces the desert has. Leaving behind us in Phoenix is the patented landscape of Saguaro Cacti and endless sand immortalized by the Road Runner and his pals. Taking it's place is yet another yet more varied landscape mixing desert and alpine flaura and fauna. There is also a similar, but older history of the west here. While much of Phoenix and the surrounding environs are steeped in the "wild-west" tradition, Santa Fe holds a similar, but more varied history.

Fortunately, I have spent a considerable amount of time previously exploring Santa Fe and Mew Mexico in general. So when the editors at Examiner.com invited me to continue on as Santa Fe travel examiner I felt both honored and, at least somewhat, qualified. Thank you to everyone who followed my postings in Phoenix and I hope at least some of you will follow me over to Santa Fe where I will be bringing you the best behind the scenes motorcycle travel reporting that I can. On to new horizons...
