After receiving several emails from readers about a device like one described in the U.S. Patent Office records in a previous article, we ordered a McCuff from the website at www.McCuff.com. Hats off to the guys at McCuff Racing Industries, Inc.! And thanks to all who sent a tip about this product.
The device soon arrived and was exactly as advertized: the yellow McCuff unit came packaged with a very well-made black textile carry-case, called an Impermeable MotoBag(R) Carry System. The bag not only keeps the cuff neatly stowed, it also ensures that gasoline isn't dripping into a saddlebag or tank bag after using it, not that it would drip anyway. The bag has Velcro fasteners on the outside, so that you can attach it to your bike or stow it inside your luggage.
The product itself is made of a strong rubbery material and fits over the end of a regular metal nozzle. It also fits precisely over the opening on a motorcycle gas tank, seating solidly and thus allowing the rider to push on the rubber environmental 'over-nozzle' - the vapor recovery boot -- sufficiently to start the gas flowing. The McCuff comes in two configurations, one for Sport / Street bikes and one for V-Twins / Cruisers.
Not only does the McCuff allow the user to push with adequate force to keep the pump working, it also creates a space (a 'fill tube') where the shut-off sensor can recognize that the tank is filled. McCuff's 'no spill motorcycle fill' system was invented by riders for riders, and it truly eliminates the overflow issue.
In two fill-ups last weekend, we found that it worked perfectly with the pump's shut-off valve, so that the rider doesn't have to continually watch the gas going into the tank, to prevent an overflow.
There was no spill and no gasoline touching the top of the bike's gas tank or the cuff itself after filling the tank completely, though perhaps a drop may have fallen off the end of the metal nozzle as the cuff was removed. This means that the cuff does have a slight odor after use; but the sturdy MotoBag, which zips up, is thick enough to prevent that odor from permeating everything else in your saddlebag.
The McCuff presently sells for $19.97 on special, including the MotoBag, which is a very good value for a well-made product that solves a problem most riders experience all the time. It would make a good holiday gift, but on the other hand, why wait? The manufacturers are finding their supply limited because of the strong demand, and McCuff Racing is also offering a shipping upgrade special for a limited time.
And as an extra feature, it just happens to match my Magna, too!
