With many in Colorado considering a “Staycation” or staying closer to home this summer, we sometimes forget the many wonderful vacation opportunities in our own backyard.
I commute to Steamboat Springs approximately once a month and usually take the “fast-route” i.e. I-70 to CO. 9 North to US 40 West. However, on my last trip, I took US 40 from I-70/Empire Exit to Steamboat Springs via Berthod Pass/Winter Park.
I passed the “town of “Hot Sulphur Springs” and decided to visit. The main attraction is the Hot Sulphur Springs Resort and Spa west of Granby and east of Kremmling. OK, before you mention “I’ve been to Glenwood Springs, been there, done that”, this is a little different.
Hot Sulphur Springs Resort and Spa is unique in its isolation. Unlike the “springs” in downtown Steamboat, Glenwood Springs, Idaho Springs, this is truly isolated, on par with Strawberry Park outside of Steamboat Springs.
At the resort are 24 “hot mineral pools” open year round. There are day-trippers as well as overnight guests. The lodging is truly Colorado from an era long gone. Simple western furniture and a few “art-deco” rooms reminiscent of the 1940’s. No TV or telephones in the rooms, a true relaxing experience. For those who desire modern life’s electronic entertainment, there is a cabin from the 1840’s remodeled with a television and fireplace.

If looking for a new destination to check out, Hot Sulphur Springs is under 2 hours from central Denver, thus an easy day trip. In addition to the lodging on-site, neighboring Kremmling has an assortment of motels and Winter Park has accommodations, which range from economical to luxury. There is camping in the area, my suggestion check out the campgrounds off Colorado Highway 9 around Green Mountain Reservoir.
