Waite/Rice Sports Information

Add the following Academic All-American award to Rice Owl's distance runner, Lennie Waites' resume. She has been selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® second team women's track & field/cross country team.

Waite, the triple major in economics, psychology, and managerial studies, graduated cum laude in 2009 with a 3.84 GPA.

Athletically, Waite was outstanding taking fourth place at the Conference USA Cross Country Championship and ninth at the NCAA South Central Regional.

During the 2009 NCAA Indoor Championship, Waite placed fifth in the mile with a Rice record time of 4:39.86. However, at the C-USA Indoor Championship, Waite won the mile in 4:49.450, while placing in the 800m in a time of 2:10.97. She would win the 3000m with a time of 9:40.16.

Waite earned All-America honors with a fifth place finish in the 3000 meter steeplechase at the NCAA Outdoor Championship just last week. During the preliminaries of the NCAA Championship, she set a Rice record with a time of 9:50.48.

During competition at the C-USA Outdoor Championship, Waite won the 3000 meter steeplechase (10:13.92) and the 1500m (4:30.15). She finished fourth in the 5000m (16:44.64). Waite also set a Rice record with a time of 4:16.09 in the 1500m at the Mt. SAC Relays.

Waite continues to compete and win elsewhere.
