It's been an exciting two weeks for the Rice Owls capped off another great performances by another of its athletes---this at the 2009 NCAA Divsion I Track & Field Championship at John McDonnell Field on the campus of the University of Arkansas.
Rice junior Jason Colwick would claim victory in the Pole Vault event clearing the bar with an amazing 5.70m/18-8.25 to win the gold. He had previously won the 2009 NCAA Indoor championship with a clearance of (5.60m/18-4.5).
Once Colwick cleared 5.70m, he elevated the bar to 5.83m/19-1.5, which would’ve been a new NCAA record. However, he was not able to clear the bar on any of his attempts. The opening height started at 5.10m, but Colwick shrugged off all until 5.50m. He would clear that height on his first attempt.
Colwick then passed on the next height of 5.55m and opted for 5.60m. He would clear that height on his first try as well. After passing on 5.65m, Colwick made easy work of what proved to be the winning height of 5.70m.
Rice now has its second NCAA outdoor champion since Ryan Harlan won the 2004 decathlon with a school record 8,171 points. Colwick is also the school’s first pole vault title winner since Dave Roberts accomplished the feat in 1971 (17-6.5), 1972 (17-3), and 1973 (17-4). Colwick remains number one in the nation and number four in the world.
He will now set his sights on Eugene Oregon---sight of the outdoor Track & Field Championship, June 25-28.
