
The Rice Owls Men and Women are not only doing well on the field of play, they are also achieving great results in the classroom. However, not only are the athletes doing well, the coaches, who motivate them, are also sharing in the rewards.
Women's track Coach, Jim Bevan was named South Central Region Coach of the Year. Bevan is celebrating his first Region, Coach of the Year Award.
In addition to the Coach, four student-athletes earned 2008-09 Conference USA Scholar Athlete of the Year Awards announced earlier this week by C-USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky.

Lennie Waite, who's competing for Rice at this week's NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the 3000 meter steeplechase, was named the C-USA Indoor Track Athlete of the Year. She earned All-American honors by finishing sixth in the mile at the NCAA Indoors in a school record time of 4:38.60. Waite maintains a 3.96 GPA after graduating cum laude from Rice last May.

Sophomore Allison Pye placed eighth at last fall's NCAA South Central Region. She also finished fifth at the Conference USA Championship to earn all-conference first-team honors. Pye has a 3.99 cumulative grade point average.

Phillip Adam is a repeat selection to the 2009 Conference USA All-Academic Team. The decathlete was a 2008 CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine All-District VI first-team selection his sophomore season. The 2009 C-USA Outdoor decathlon champion is an economics major with a 3.94 GPA.

Aleks Perka more than doubled his previous career scoring and rebounding averages. He averaged 6.7 points and 4.5 rebounds per game as a senior for the Owls. Perka carries a 3.09 GPA in sports management.
