The local libraries provide great, free fun for summer days.
If you're in York County (SC), the libraries host free weekly childrens programs. This week's program was Zelnick the Magician. Zelnick presented an interesting, interactive program about reading, self-esteem and kindness in a creative and fun way. The programs are aimed at children up to age 12. Each week has a different show with entertaining ways to encourage children to read. The schedule can be found here.
Additionally, the libraries (also Charlotte Mecklenburg libraries) have a summer reading program with incentives for children, teens and adults. The children's program (ages 4 through rising 5th graders) is titled Be Creative. Children fill in a reading log each time they read and are rewarded when they fill in a complete log (10 hours and 20 minutes). The prizes in York county include a reading medal, coupons to local businesses, their name in the local paper, and an entry into a drawing for a gift card and picture in the paper. For Charlotte libraries children receive either a prize or a book buck (which donates books to local centers in need) for every 10 hours read.
It's a great way to beat the heat, it's free and it's a positive experience for your children - hard to beat! For more information about York County, click here. For information about Charlotte Mecklenburg, click here.
Have fun.
