A Few Unrelated and Undigested Poetry News Items by Vittorio (I’ll turn any stone over twice) Carli

Not to toot my own horn, but I am going to be performing with Wayne Allen Jones and Sid Yiddish at 5:30-7 at Starbucks on June 13 at  2023 W Roscoe St (between Damen Ave & Seeley Ave). Sid Yiddish has recently had a big feature article written about him in “The Reader" (see http://www.chicagoreader.com/features/stories/ourtown/080821/).
He is a fascinating   poet/throat singer/exotic instrumentalist/actor/self proclaimed tap dancing spy, and I knew him many years ago under the name Charles Bernstein (at first I thought he changed his name to avoid to avoid getting mixed up with the other Charles Bernstein, but he later cleared me up on the issue as you can see if you read the last comment on this page.) he has performed allo over lately  at such venued as C. J. Laity’s Loose Leaf Venue, Harold Washington   Library, as well as an extremely interesting theatre/sound festival (the name eludes me and I am running out of time on the library computer.)IIn addition he his the chicago coordinator of the Bathroom  Project.  Go to Libraryhttp://poetswearprada.home.att.net/CharlesBernstein.html to see his web page and his “A Great Big Poem about Me.”

He will be accompanied by Wayne Allen Jones, who I would characterize as an old fashioned,  but lively intellectual formalist poet (perhaps he would disagree). He is the publisher of Fractal Edge Press which had put out about half the good poetry books from Chicago that I own-including enticing works by Joe Roarty, Lauren  and Francesco Levato (separate books), Dan Cleary, and the PolyRythmic Arts Collective (They have a regular show at . See http://www.fractaledgepress.com/ for the selection.) Wayne  is also a talented writer in his right and everyone should buy his chapbook “Decades of Rehearsal.” In addition he combines social activism with poetry as you can see if you go to poetsforhumanrights.ning.com/profile/WayneAllenJones.

I’m usually fairlyanti corporate (just ask my brother) but I couldn’t resist when a friend who works at the Star Bucks (the always friendly  and gracious Diane Soubly) asked me if I wanted to help coordinate an accessable /once a month poetry series (The poetry will alternate with other types of art such as music, stand-up, and comedy.) I see many of the same people when I go to poetry readings and it’s a challenge to perform for people that aren’t necessarily poets or even interested in poetry. There are also some great artists that have displayed their work there.
There will also be  paintings on dislay for the art buffs in the audience. The current featured artist is  Nicholas Barron, who is a painter/musician.  To see/experience his work go to  myspace.com/NICHOLASBARRON..

·         The annual Buddahpalooza show takes place at Jak’s Tap (on Jackson just west of Halsted) on Monday at approximately 7:30 (the host ,Dave usually goes by real time rather than poetry time). Among the attractions will be Matt Barton’s debut of “H-Hour,” and a special performance by Janus the two headed dog  People will also be reciting anti war song lyrics (hopefully no one will do “Billy Don’t Be a Hero.” ) I’m sure they will also be pushing "Exact Change Only" a  nifty literary volume  which includes seclections  from Buddah 309,  Esteban Colon,  Christopher Gallinari, Charlie Newman, Quraysh Ali Lansana, Elizabeth Harper, Robert Lawrence, Tom  Curry, Steven Hammond, Tom Roby, Shelley Nation, Michael C. Watson, and (gasp) yours truly.
       * This is a late addition to the blog.  Poets can NOW submit their work for the second issue of "Exact Change Only."  Submissions must be send by word document emails  with the  name of the poet , the number of poems, and  the name of the poems attached to  exactchangepress.com by October 15.
·         Melinda Fries has been putting out an on-line publication for many years called Ausgang. It’s not in the strictest terms, a poetry publication, but she will basically post any kind of writing on the seasonal theme. This time around it's isolation (about half the poems I hear are about that issue), and submissions are due on next Friday (June 19.) Go to www.ausgang.com to submit, and remember that resistance is futile.
·         This just came in as a poetry  flash !!! C.J. Laity (who has always been a dynamic stage performer) will be among the featured poets at this weekend’s Humbold Park Art Fair at 1301 N. Humboldt Blvd.   He will read   on Sunday at 6 pm. It looks like he will be doing a tribute to Pablo Neruda.

** Sid Yiddish later explained to me that  Sid is his middle name, and he picked "Yiddish" as his last name because of "Yid",  and his Jewish origins. The name also was inspired by  a band.  Remember that cops hate poetry.
