Art LA opened last night at Barker Hangar for VIP's to take a look-see of all the beyond uber-current, out there, too cool for LA Art Show school, some too cynical/ ironic art by galleries from all over the world who were invited to show at the event sponsored by MOCA. Some of the highlights were Joe Deutch (Parker Jones Gallery), Pearl C. Hsiung (Steve Turner Contemporary), Emilio Chapela Perez (Eds Galeria), and my two personal favorites Helen Verhoeven and Henry Taylor (Mesler & Hug).
Other notables were Alexandra Wiesenfeld (The Happy Lion) and Linda Besemer (Angles Gallery). You cannot tell from the picture below, but it's actually quite genius how she made these works. They look like glazed neoprene and hang over a metal rack like a towel, but they're pure gesso and acrylic paint, created slowly and methodically on glass, then peeled off and worked again from the other side. Insanely detailed, optic illusion-inducing, and very, very creative use of line and color and geometry. Big fan.
