Want a reason to party this summer? Celebrate a birthday!

It's the season of pool parties and bar-b-ques, and if you're in need of a unique theme to make your party a guaranteed success, why not celebrate your kitty's birthday?

Your friends may have just attended a pal's chihuahua cumpleaños, but a cat birthday can be just as fun. Sure, we all know kitty doesn't know what day it is, but this is just an excuse to get everyone together, right?

The major difference between a dog's birthday party and a cat's birthday party is the fact that it's probably not a good idea to have your guests bring their feline friends along to the party. The only cats in attendance should be the guest of honor and his feline brothers and sisters of the same household. This allows your guests to not have to worry about their own pet while partying and you won't hear anyone say "I have to go because spot isn't feeling well."

So how DO you make your cat's birthday party fun for your cat and your human guests ready for a summer celebration?

— Birthday hats! Tailwagging.com has "fishy cat hats" your cats are sure to adore. Well, that is of course if they don't take them off right away. Either way, they make great conversation starters for guests who are mingling at your summer soiree.

— M&M's with your cat's face on them are not only tasty, but adorable. Have a bowl sitting out for guests to munch on or wrap them in little baggies with bows for a creative party favor.

— Birthday cake, of course. Actually, you'll need to have two birthday cakes - one for your kitty and one for your human guests. For your guests, a plain sheetcake with a photo of your cat will work perfectly. For the cat of the day, use the recipe below to make something special. He'll love it, and your cat-loving guests will be asking for the recipe.

  • What you'll need:
Two 3.5 oz cans ground wet food
1/3 cup crushed greenies cat treats
    1/4 cup dried catnip herb
  • Step 1:
Put greenies cat treats in a sealed plastic baggie and crush to a coarse powder. Add catnip and mix.
  • Step 2:
Slowly add dry ingredients to the canned food in a bowl. Mix thoroughly.
  • Step 3:
Pour (or dump, rather) 'batter' into a lightly greased baking dish. Mold into a fishy shape.
  • Step 4:
Bake in the oven at 350 Degrees F for 25 minutes.
  • Step 5:
While cake is baking, mix 1/3 cup cool whip and 1/2 cup dried catnip herb.
  • Step 6:
When cake has had a chance to cool, apply catnip, sing Happy Birthday to your beloved feline and serve (about 8 servings).
  • Caution should be taken if your cats have a high sensitivity to catnip. Use less catnip in the recipe and replace catnip in the frosting with more crushed treats.

More party supplies for your cat's big day can be found at www.tailwagging.com.  You can also help homeless cats at your party by providing a donation jar for your local Houston metro shelter.

Stop letting the dogs have all the fun and throw a summer party your friends will surely remember!
