Fitness 101: Where do I find a top Pilates instructor in New York City?
Here's a new way to experience the wellness benefits of Pilates.
As millions of people already know, and more are learning every day, Pilates is a gentle to vigorous workout designed to increase flexibility of your joints and muscles to keep your entire body healthier, longer.
3rd-degree black belt karate instructor and pilates trainer Amelia Sheftall has combined her two passions, to create a new form of Pilates -
Karate Pilates. Designed from a martial arts perspective for maximum flexibility
In addition to it sounding snappy, Sheftall has created a new flexibility and training regime that specifically addresses the needs of martial artists but is effective for anyone who wants to focus on strengthening and lengthening their muscles and keeping joints loose and flexible.
As her website says, "martial arts training often includes repetitive motion and holding unusual postures for long periods of time. These actions can lead to self-inflicted injuries if done without proper alignment and the use of the most efficient muscle groups for each movement. "
Not just for punching and kicking
I've taken Amelia's classes for several years and I credit her with helping me increase the height and power of my kicks, improving my balance and keeping me self-inflicted injury free.
Amelia runs classes in NYC as well as private training sessions. I find her compassionate, thorough, fun and attuned to the needs of the individual student, whatever their level of experience and ability, from beginner to highly advanced.
And even though her techniques were originally designed with the needs of martial arts students in mind, they are easily applied to dancers, bicyclists or people who have never taken a martial arts or exercise class in their life but want to begin to experience the health benefits of physical exercise.
