A typical response to Sound Grenade, one of the most popular
apps on the iphone.

One of the most popular downloads for the iphone, especially among school teens, is a pain inducing ear piercing sound app called Sound Grenade.

When it was first introduced a few weeks ago it quickly climbed to the top of Apple's most downloaded apps, logging 1.2 million downloads in its first two weeks and is cruising with about 65,000 weekly downloads.

"Someone set it off in class and people jumped," said 13-year old New Yorker Matthew Tanzosh. "I had a headache and neck pain after."

Created in about 20 minutes using 10 lines of code by High Gloss software, this demonic  app has been known to cause headaches, muscle pain and nausea. Sound Grenade Pro for $1.99 had 4,800 downloads in its first two days and charted on the Top 25 Paid Apps list.

"The goal of my app was to create a tool for people to annoy others," wrote co-author 22 year old Reuben Bijl and his partner Toby Vincent in their Feb 09 blog post.

"Wrap an average idea that you think will appeal to immature and uncool people with some average graphics, and boom, top 10 app." I gotta admit there seems to be a simple genius in that.

Can dogs hear it? How about adults?

A rumor swirling among young people is that adults "over 39" can't hear it. And in fact there is some truth to this claim. Accordingf to Bijl, hearing the device doesn't have anything to do with age per se, "but with what people's ears have been exposed to during their lifetime. Someone who works in loud environments for long periods of time is more likely to not be able to hear it. "

Blog comments have claimed the app has destroyed their iphones speakers.

According to High Gloss research, dogs "can definitely hear it," but the makers are  "unsure whether cats can or not."

On the plus side, you can "clear a party" with it or maybe you can use it to ward off attackers and muggers like audio mace. It has not been tried yet, as far as we know, so don't blame me if it doesn't work.

The dastardly duo are currently cooking up more mayhem, but so far all of their new iphone apps including a zoom camera and a cocaine simulator ("more fun that it sounds!") have been rejected by Apple for "various reasons."
