Go ahead, screw it up:
What's the worst that can happen? Someone questions your legitimacy to be President of the United States?
Sometimes goofing up happens, as we saw in the swearing in video. And maybe it was even a good thing,
It was actually Roberts who got confused with the wording (it is the only oath in the constitution so apparently is has to be read exactly) but y'know what? Everything turned out ok. Roberts was extremely courteous and said it was "my fault."
The next day they did a second swearing in at the white house with 9 people present just to be sure.
I think so much stuff was brought to that moment that a goof-up was like a release valve and let the rest of the inauguration flow smoothly.
So go ahead, do it wrong, be willing to be waaay off base.
Reach for the ring and so what if you knock over the dessert table and send the meringue flying in wacky slapstick style.
Own up to it if you do screw up and move on.
I have a friend who is a very successful web entrepreneur. He's not some “genius” or anything.
In the first internet gold rush around 1999, he founded a web start up that would help people surf the web better by reviewing web sites. It was a decent idea if not a bit confusing. He raised lots of money and went forth. When the bubble burst he had not yet turned a profit and his entire business went under.
He took some writing and editing jobs here and there, but he never gave up his goal. A few years later he started a real estate web site that quickly expanded to five successful lifestyle sites and now he is one of the internet’s most successful entrepreneurs.
Had he been daunted by his earlier failure or “embarrassed” by his crappy technology and puzzling concept, he would never be successful today. If he let what other people thought about him rule his decisions, he would be nowhere.
So what if you do it wrong? What’s the worst that can happen?
There is no short-cut. But you want great things for yourself and you can surely have them. Practice, have patience, make mistakes, fall down, get up and do it again. Enjoy the failure as part of your becoming greater.
