With the summer fishing season here it is time to fill your freezer with fresh Alaskan fish.  If there is an  abundance of  previous years catch taking up space in the freezer why not use it to make home made doggy fish sticks?  Fish and fish oil is a great supplement for dogs, for years vets have used the it for the treatment of allergies and joint health.  Salmon in particular is rich in omega-3 fatty acids that are great for shiny and itch free coats.  Any fish will do for this recipe, salmon, halibut, trout and cod are all acceptable, but salmon seems to be in abundance here in Alaska and is richer in omega-3 than the others.  You can use wheat flour as a substitute for the rice or potato flour if your dog does not have a wheat allergy.  Make sure to remove all bones and don't use fish that is freezer burnt, if you won't eat it yourself don't feed it to your best friend!  Your dog will thank you.

Alaskan Salmon doggy fish sticks

8 to 10 ounces of fish,  juice included if there is any

3 eggs,shells included

1/2 cup of ground flax seed

1/2 cup of ground sesame seed

1/2 cup of fresh chopped parsley (for fresh breath!)

2 to 3 cups of rice or potato flour

Mix all ingredients  except flour very, very well in a food processor then add flour gradually until a dough ball forms.  Place on a floured surface and roll out until about 1/4 inch thick then cut according to dogs size, 4" long and 2" wide for large dogs and 2" long by 1" wide for small dogs.  You can also use cookie cutters to make shapes if you like.  Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes then rotate the cookie sheets and bake for another 10 to 15 minutes depending on how hard or soft you want them.
