The following press release was just sent to me and it is very exciting. With new land being donated to the preserve space on the peninsula and plans for extended riding trails, the future for equestrian sports in the SF bay area seems to be expanding. And who better to start with than our bay area youth.

Glenoaks Stables, located at the Glenoaks Equestrian Center on Alpine Rd in Portola Valley recently became the first Peninsula-based Pony Club Riding Center. As a Pony Club Riding Center, Glenoaks Stables allows youth 21 and under to participate in the internationally recognized United States Pony Club (USPC) program even if they do not own a horse.

The Pony Club program teaches members to ride on the flat, over jumps and in the open. In addition, members “rate” their riding ability and horse management skills against an established standard of proficiency. They are able to participate in center, regional and national activities.

Each of Pony Club ratings is more difficult than the preceding one. It requires Pony Club members to learn more about horses and their care while becoming increasingly accomplished riders and teachers to younger members. The top rating, “A,” is reached by fewer than one in 300 and denotes a highly competent and knowledgeable horseperson throughout the international horse world.

“Pony Club has always provided all-around education in the care, handling and riding of horses for serious equestrians. It’s nationally approved testing system gives students a recognized level of attainment. We are proud to become a Pony Club Riding Center because it reinforces our belief that good horsemanship and good care of your horse enhance your riding experience,” said Rhonda Weiss, Glenoaks Stables Director.

Glenoaks Riding School
is located at Glenoaks Equestrian Center. A full-service riding facility including A-level hunter/jumper training, a riding school for all skill levels and a sale program. The facility includes 3 all-weather rings, a derby field including ditches, dikes and water jumps, access to 1,000 acres of trails, an 8-horse Euro Walker and round pen. The Center is located at 3639 Alpine Road, just 3 minutes west of Hwy 280.

The United States Pony Club Inc (USPC) was founded in 1954 as a nonprofit national youth organization to teach riding and horsemanship through a formal educational program. Many of the nation’s top equestrians, including most of our Olympic Equestrian team members, have Pony Club roots. Members range in age from 4 to 21. Activities are English-riding based, and members ride both ponies and horses, depending on the size of the rider and the discipline in which he/she is competing.
