Chaps Feed Store

Chaps Feed Store’s small size belies its large selection. Chaps has been in business for 63 years at 29216 Five Mile, just east of Middlebelt in Livonia. The business has evolved from a general feed store to one that serves a growing niche market of educated pet food buyers. Shoppers often arrive bearing a list of premium pet food brands they’ve researched on the internet that are not available at grocery or big box pet stores.  Chaps’ selection of holistic pet foods made from US ingredients is one of the best in the area and prices are reasonable as well. In addition to premium pet foods Chaps Feed Store carries pet care items, toys, chews and equipment.

The store also caters to bird watchers, carrying over 150 different types of bird feeders and a number of custom bird seed mixtures which are available for examination in clear jars at the register. Rounding out the selection, Chaps Feed Store also carries a variety of lawn and garden supplies including fertilizer, straw, garden pest remedies and bulk grass seed.

The store looks old fashioned, and the service is old fashioned, too – in the good sense. Because of the store’s small footprint, larger items are stored in the back and many displays are so chock full of items it can be overwhelming. Just ask for what you’re looking for and Chaps’ staff will find it for you. All the employees are very knowledgeable about the products and they are willing to order items that are not in stock. Once you’ve visited Chaps a few times, you’ll be greeted by name every time you come in and they’ll likely know what you came for before you tell them. Checking out is a low tech affair with one cash register, not a scanner in sight and someone is always available to carry your purchases out to the car.
