After a weekend of top box office performance by another Hollywood assembly line Catholic bashing flick, to the higher learning religious hypocrisy of an elitist University of Notre Dame for allowing pro-abortion President Obama to speak at its commencement address, Catholics could learn a few things from Islamic fundamentalists.
The mainstream media news cycle yesterday was filled with so-called Catholics spinning and compromising their religious beliefs faster than a communion line on Super Bowl Sunday. When it comes down to it, instead of promoting a core message of values and beliefs as the Notre Dame class of 2009 made its way into the world, the University chose to conduct its commencement as a lesson in concession in the name of star power and influence.
Being a conservative Catholic isn’t always easy. First off, you have a church governing hierarchy that refuses to defend itself against a continual barrage of socially accepted bashing and blaspheme. Then there’s the church’s liberal appeasement stance on issues relating to illegal immigration. It’s enough to make even the most devout Catholic take a step back and question the current Vatican leadership.
When was the last time you heard a late night comedian bash the religion of Islam? In fact, when was the last time you heard anyone at all in mainstream culture bash Islam? It just doesn’t happen because Muslims refuse to allow it.
I have to admit that I admire the passionate fervor in which Muslims defend their religion. I’m not talking about the modern day religious crusades of murderous extremism taking place in cities around the world in the name of Islam. There is nothing civilized about violence in the name of religion. I am referring to an unwavering obligation to preservation of belief that American Muslims successfully adhere to in a secular society where morality is considered the new sin.
How do conservative Catholics make their voices heard in these troubled times?
I believe conservative alumni at St. Mary’s College in Moraga said it best earlier this year when they threatened to withhold donation dollars to the college as a result of a paid lecture appearance by alleged Obama ghostwriter and terrorist Bill Ayers. Support those in the church that support America. Amen.
