After a while the kids start looking at America differently; they start to wonder if what Moody is saying is true. They remember that America beat up that kid in the fourth grade a while back...twice! Taliban, his name was... Well sure, he's a bully too - but it's been a while and maybe he wasn't really all that bad. Maybe America just exaggerated those stories to give himself an excuse to beat up Taliban. Maybe he was just trying to make himself look good. Maybe... America's the real bully!
America, of course sees what's happening and he knows who's spreading the rumors about him. Why, America's own father came to the playground once and chewed him out in front of all the other kids! -Didn't seem to believe that his own son was really the good guy! America's dumfounded that the rest of the school kids are starting to doubt his sincerity. He's been protecting them for a long, long time and has personally put his own safety on the line to keep them from harm time and time again. How can they not remember? How can they be so fickle? America's taken some pretty bad hits for these kids; bloody lip, bruised jaw, black eye. He took it because he knew if he didn't, no one else would. No one else is big enough. No one else is as tough as America.
We'll leave the playground now, as it is. Moody is still there doing his thing and so is America. The story hasn't ended because the school children haven't decided who to believe. At the very least we hope that the kids in America's own class - the kids who know him the best, will stand by him. But I guess we'll just have to see.
