One of the most coveted theater tickets in New York right now isn’t to a Broadway show. It’s to the Public Theater’s production of Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night,” starring Anne Hathaway as Viola, at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. The show runs through July 12.

In August, the Public will be staging Euripides’ “The Bacchae” at the Delacorte, certain to become another must see production.

Tickets are free—if you’re lucky enough or determined enough to get them. Here are three ways to score tickets:

1. Pick up tickets at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park - From the East Side, enter the park at 79th Street and Fifth Avenue and walk west to the Delacorte. From the West Side, enter Central Park at 81st Street and follow the footpath east.)

Free tickets are handed out at the Delacorte Theater on the day of the performance, starting at 1:00 PM.  The line to get tickets starts forming early in the morning, often as early as 6:00 AM. It follows a path designated by the Delacorte staff and you must stay in the line in order to qualify. There is a limit of 2 tickets per person.

If you arrive after 10:00 it’s not likely there will be any tickets left by the time you get to the front of the line. So plan to arrive early. However, once all the allotted tickets are distributed at 1:00, a standby line sometimes forms in the hope that there will be extra tickets available at 6:30. There are separate lines to accommodate people with disabilities and senior citizens, who are 65 years or older. (Proof is required.)

2. The Virtual Line – This is a sort of on-line lottery for tickets to Shakespeare in the Park productions. After registering on the Virtual Line site, you may apply for tickets between 12:00 AM and 1:00 PM on the day of the show you wish to see. Later that day, you must log-on again between 1:00 PM and 6:00 PM to see if you have been selected.  If you have, your tickets will be held for you at the Delacorte Theater and you can pick them up between 6:00 and 7:30 PM. For more information, click here.

There is a special Virtual Line for Seniors. Click here.

3. Shakespeare in the Boroughs Program – If you live or work in the boroughs (including Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, State Island and the Bronx) you may be able to get vouchers for tickets in your neighborhood on selected days.  These vouchers are redeemable for tickets at the Delacorte Theater between 4:00 and 7:30 PM on that day. For more details, click here.

Dates and times of the shows:

Twelfth Night” : Tuesdays through Sundays at 8:00 PM through July 12. There is no performance on July 4. An additional performance is scheduled for July 6.

The Bacchae” August 11 – 30, Tuesdays through Sundays at 8:00 PM. No performance on August 24.

What to bring with you:

You may want to bring a pillow to sit on. In case of rain, a poncho and umbrella will come in handy.  For waiting in line in the park, a picnic lunch is an excellent idea.  So is a blanket, reading material and maybe a pack of cards.
