This Monday, October 12 (Columbus Day), the Metropolitan Museum of Art will be open to the public. It is part of the Met’s Holiday Mondays program, which invites everyone into the museum on the Mondays of major holiday weekends, when the Met has traditionally been closed.
On Columbus Day, the exhibition American Stories: Paintings of Everyday Life 1765-1915 will debut to the public for the first time. The show brings together more than 100 paintings that depict the lives of ordinary people during an 150-year period in American history, stretching from the pre-Revolutionary period to the start of World War I.
Vermeer’s painting The Milkmaid will also be on view, as will the photography show Looking In: Robert Frank’s The Americans. As usual, much the museum’s astonishingly vast permanent collection will be on view too.
For children ages five through 12 and their accompanying adults, the Met will hold an hour-long Adventures in Art program on October 12 at 11 a.m., noon, 1:15 p.m., and 2:30 p.m. It will include discussion and sketching of a few of the artworks on display.The museum’s cafes and some of the gift shops will also be open.
It's pay what you wish. But the reccommend fees are: adults $20, students $10, seniors $15, members and children under 12, accompanied by an adult, free.
