What’s your favorite New York neighborhood? If you’ve lived in the city for a while, chances are you have a list of them. But even if you’ve lived your whole life in New York, there are probably many neighborhoods you still don’t know well. Life is just too short and this city of immigrants is constantly changing.
Now Naomi Fertitta, a native New Yorker, has written and produced a good-looking book that offers an overview of 20 of the city’s most atmospheric neighborhoods. Each one she’s chosen has a particular ethnic flavor. In Manhattan, there’s everything from Washington Heights, where Dominican culture rules, to Greenwich Village, with its recently acquired British enclave. No book that takes on the city’s ethnic culture could limit itself to Manhattan, of course. Fertitta covers all the boroughs and even includes “Little Sri Lanka” in Staten Island.
Besides summarizing the history of each district, she lists her favorite shops and restaurants. Paul Aresu’s colorful photographs of the streets and people, make this far more than an ordinary guide book—it’s a visual pleasure.
