Get your costume ready. It’s almost time for New York’s 35th annual Village Halloween Parade—the biggest, most extravagant Halloween celebration in the USA. The parade will wind its way up Sixth Avenue from Spring Street to 21st Street on Saturday night, October 31, beginning at 7:00 PM.
If you want to march in this spectacular event—and who wouldn’t?—you’ll need to wear a costume. So start snipping, stitching and painting now. There will be stiff competition! (Check out some costumes from previous years in the slide show below.)
Only those wearing costumes will be allowed to march. All others are invited to watch from behind the barricades. Marchers should line up on Sixth Avenue between Spring and Broome Streets any time from 6:30 to 8:30 PM. Prizes for the best costumes will be awarded. After the parade, marchers are invited to a party at Webster Hall.
The Village Halloween Parade was started in 1973 by mask maker and puppeteer Ralph Lee, who costumed his family and friends and organized a neighborhood walk from door-to-door. In each succeeding year, the parade became bigger and covered more streets in the Village. In its eighth year, Jeanne Fleming, a long-time parade participant, took over the organization and now manages the annual parade. These days, more than 2 million people attend each year. From an intimate community event, it has transformed into a world-famous extravaganza.
So… get your costume on and shore up your resolve. And don’t forget to check out the Village Halloween Parade's website before heading to the parade!
