One thing that people with disabilities tell us all the time is that mountain towns aren't accessible.  They think historic means stairs, mountain means hills, and skiing means snow; but that just simply isn't true.  In this four part series, we'll dive into the hot spots in each region of Colorado, bringing accessible lodging to the forefront of options for you no matter where you travel within the state!  Colorado is America's playland, we want you to use it!

What better place to start than the northern strip of the state? Denverites are constantly telling us that they've never been to Steamboat or nearby towns, either "it's just too far" or they haven't had a good enough reason.  But we're proud that Steamboat and its neighbor Winter Park are extremely accessible; proud enough to make this the first installment of this series.

Steamboat Springs

Whether you're a hotelier or a small inn lover, your options are rich in Steamboat.  Despite having the smallest base area in the state, staying at the ski area means being close to the action and having multiple options to do so makes it easy.

The Steamboat Grand and Sheraton Resort are the two best on-site options with 55 ADA rooms between the two of them; several offer roll in showers.

There are several condominium options at the ski area for people with disabilities, including The Terraces and the Villas at Walton Creek. These two and three bedroom condos don't have all the ADA bells and whistles, such as grip bars or roll in showers, but the wide doors, spacious first-floor layout, and garage parking are great for those who don't need the top tier of ADA amenities.

There is also one great condo option right in the heart of downtown Steamboat, a one-bedroom unit at the Residences of Old Town.

Hahn's Peak Inn is located 30 minutes north of Steamboat near Hahns Peak Village and two beautiful state parks as well as being just over the border to Wyoming.  For those seeking peace, the inn's fully accessible suite has a queen, a trundle, and a twin bed as well as a fully accessible shower, minus the roll-in, and breakfast is served on your deck!

But if you need any help finding something not listed here, Steamboat Central Reservations is one of the few res offices in the state whose employees are trained each year on helping their customers with disabilities and have a database of accessible rooms to work with.  800-922-2722

Winter Park

Home to the largest adaptive program in the world, the National Sports Center for the Disabled, Winter Park takes the cake in the state for accessibility.  Near to several State Parks as well as the gorgeous Rocky Mountain National Park, using Winter Park as a home base while you explore this region is a great idea.   Also well equipped with an extremely helpful database and staff at the Winter Park Central Reservations office, you can one-stop shop with them.  800-453-2525

The Winter Park Mountain Lodge has five ADA compliant rooms with roll in showers as well as several others with the tub layout.

The newer, gorgeous and enormous Zephyr Mountain Lodge makes the top of the list for the condo option, with a two bedroom unit complete with a roll-in shower.

And if you're looking for B&Bs, look no further than the Alpen Rose Bed and Breakfast with two accessible rooms on the main floor.
