One of my favorite travel planning websites, Tripadvisor came out this week with their top five clothing optional beach picks. Based on my personal experience and research, I have to say I concur wholeheartedly with their selections. The only beach I would have added is the red sand beach at Kaihalulu, Maui behind the Hana Maui Hotel; but that is a story for another day.
I admit, naked frolicking is not for everyone, but more folks that you would think are supportive of nude beaches. A related Tripadvisor survey showed that roughly a third of you would bare all at the beach, a third would go to spectate (but not participate) and a third would rather frequent beaches where everyone is wearing some form of swimwear. While there are many unofficial nude beaches all over the world, the ones listed here are officially sanctioned and designated as clothing optional. If you are in the third of the population that prefers to frequent beaches requiring clothing, you might want to take care clicking on some of these links!
Mykonos, Greece – Beautiful Mykonos is the home to many fabulous beaches, including the largest of the south chain of beaches; Elia Beach. The beach features include great restaurants, wonderful hotels and a designated clothing optional section.
Bal Harbor, Florida – Haulover Beach Park has a half-mile section of beach that is designated as clothing optional. This area, called “Haulover nude beach” is partitioned off from the more family friendly clothing required southern end. Lifeguards and showers are available on both sides of the beach.
Orient Beach, St. Maarten – Check out Club Orient, the only nude beach resort on the island of St. Martin in the French West indies. The temperature is a perfect 85 degrees year round, perfect for getting that all over tan without getting goose bumps.
Black's Beach, La Jolla, California - - The official name of this beach is the Torrey Pines State Beach. Be careful if nude beaching to do it between the markers, as there have been citations if you take off that suit on the City Beach. Also be careful of the tourists, some of them can be a little creepy. Check out the website here for directions to the clothing optional section but be careful – this website is clothing optional too!
Wreck Beach, Vancouver, Canada - Hands down winning the award for the most beautiful scenery (no pun intended) is this spectacular beach in British Columbia. During the summer especially, expect a carnival like atmosphere with thousands of people and beach vendors selling everything from fruit smoothies to buffalo burgers.
One final word of advice for hitting the beach sans suit…SUNSCREEN!
