When it comes to tent camping locations, you won't find many in Southern California. Most of the campgrounds right on the beach require that visitors are in "self contained" vehicles, which is just as well. Just as well because many of the beach front campgrounds resemble ... well, they resemble beach front parking lots! There are however a few that do allow tent camping and three of the best that do round out our "Top Ten California beach campgrounds". Be sure to pack your air mattresses or other padding, as you might be pitching your tent on asphalt, and make sure to make reservations because these are all in high demand.

Santa Barbara – Refugio State Beach
These campsites have to be the closest to the beach of any of our Southern California picks. The campground itself is also one of the most lovely, with with many palm tree shaded camping spots to be had. This is a very beautiful and popular campground, so be sure to make your reservations in advance. You can make reservations up to one year in advance, and the folks who are camping there have done just that. Mark your calendar and set your alarm if you want to camp here! Full facilities available as well as 24/7 security.
Laguna Beach - Doheney Beach , near Dana Point
This campground is consistently voted Orange County’s best, and also has lots of oceanfront camping. Many of the campsites at this popular campground are just steps from the beach, but as a result have little to no shade. The campground website has a nice interactive map with pictures to help you choose just the right spot.

San Elijo and South Carlsbad State beaches, San Diego
Both of these southern California state beaches allow tent camping and are only a couple of miles from each other. The campsites are up on a high bluff above the actual beach with fantastic views of the ocean and there is really no shade to speak of. Wooden steps lead from the campgrounds to the beaches. Pick your site carefully as they aren't all right on the beach, some of them front the road.
