SPECIAL ATTRACTIONS: VISIT THE GARAGE MAHAL WHILE CRUISING THROUGH IN HOUSTON TEXAS (NO BULL)

If you enjoy cars and learning more about motorsports history in general, you'll definitely want to plan a trip to "The Art Car Museum" while in Houston, TX. The cars you find there might not be the true definition of exotic (as eccentric is a better word that comes to mind when seeking for a word to describe them), but they are all one of a kind classics.

The museum, "is a private institution dedicated to contemporary art with an emphasis on art cars, other fine arts, and artists who are rarely, if ever, acknowledged by other cultural institutions..." according to the website VisitHoustonTexas.com. The site offers the following details for car enthusists:

The conceptual origin of the museum was the 1984 Collision Show at Lawndale Art Center, which resulted in art car workshops around the city and, eventually, the Art Car Parade.

The car museum, nicknamed 'Garage Mahal', features some of the most creative, wildly embellished, and skillfully crafted art cars, low riders, and mobile contraptions, as well as art exhibitions by local, regional, and national artists.

The museum showroom celebrates the spirit of this post-modern age of car culture, in which individuals have re-molded the factory model sameness of their cars to the specifications of their own images and visions.

The Art Car Museum opened in February 1998. It was founded by artist Ann Harithas, a long-time supporter of the art car movement, and James Harithas, former director of the Corcoran Museum in Washington, D.C. and the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston. Car artist David Best created the museum's distinctive scrap-metal and chrome exterior.

Plan your trip or visit dates carefully because this car museum in only open Wednesday through Sunday (from 11:00am to 6:00pm). The museum makes and outstanding day trip or road trip destination for those who love Americana roadside attractions and are looking for a fun activity or thing to do with the family.
