Last night – while celebrating Senior Night on the high school football field, prior to the last game of the season, with a group of über-proud football moms and dads – I realized something. I realized – despite the media coverage to the contrary – there are a lot more good people in this world than there are bad. It also occurred to me that that might have something to do with the fact that there are a lot of good parents out there. Truth: Behind every good kid stands a parent who has, for the most part, made it their mission to raise a respectable, responsible human being.
And whether it was a kid stemming from a single-parent household or one who (by remarriage) inherited a set of four parents, it was clear that the one determining factor in the success of these amazing senior student/athletes was the outstanding support and encouragement that they received at home. Not to forget the fail-safe continuation of that support and encouragement that is due in part to the school, the teachers, the coaches and the administration alike. It takes a village.
As a mother of one such senior student/athlete, I know the unbelievable amount of energy, time and money it takes to see your kid through to their senior year in high school. And I know the kind of time, effort and patience my son’s teachers and coaches have put forth as well. It’s exhausting just thinking about it, and it has often left me (and his dad) wanting to run for the hills, but after last night’s ceremony, standing proudly next to our towering firstborn son, sporting his toothy grin and football uniform – as well as standing amongst his proud peers – I now know that there is hope for our future. And, by no means, was that an accident.
It has taken a lot of blood, sweat and tears to make it to last night’s Senior Night, standing beneath those bright Friday night lights. And as bright as those beautiful lights were, I’m not sure they outshined the proud smiles of those parents, teachers and coaches who passionately and somewhat painstakingly paved the way.
