November is senior dog adoption month. I highly recommend adoptions, but go to a reputable adoption society, instead of adopting through other means such as; ads, friend of a friend, etc.
Why?
Reputable adoption societies screen the dogs and the adoptees. It is important that a dog be placed with a new owner that will fit; home, fence, work schedule, dog's size, temperament.
Sadly, we have become a “throw away” world. If we tire of something, or it doesn’t work properly, some of us tend to “throw it away.” I have seen this happen with many adoptions (as well as with new puppies).
Your local, SPCAs, and petfinder.com are very careful in screening people and matching with the proper pet. I recently adopted my Rat Terrier, Blackjack, through petfinder.com. Because of my experience and my husband's experience with dogs, they knew Blackjack would be a perfect fit in our lives. He had some behavioral issues in the beginning, only because he was misunderstood. Now, he is the love of our lives and gets along wonderfully with our Westie, Mac.
Petfinder.com lists dogs (and other pets) from across the country that are fostered by different agencies. Check out their site.
