Billionaires for Educational Reform is a satirical blog which sheds a humorous light on the interest by the very wealthy in public education. The fictitious posts provide a running commentary which attempt to reflect the views and motives of the American ruling class about 'reforming' public education.
The authors weigh in on the subject of privatization, charter schools, and the wealthy individuals who are influencing public school 'reform.' Mayor Mike Bloomberg is often a favorite topic. This is from the post entitled, Hire That Man, which talks about, among other things, the mayor's refusal to address the issue of overcrowding in the city's public schools:
The more of those public school urchins we can put in a class, the better, I say. Teach a hundred of them in a class and look at the money you save on teachers. Why do you think Mikey got Joel to close all those schools? Now that’s the sort of school reform only a billionaire can come up with! And I’ll bet that GBN bloke could even get the masses to think it’s for their own good.
The blog is a must read for those who appreciate satire and its ability to bring humor to a situation which would otherwise make you want to cry. It also provides some very real commentary about the privatization trend which has been prevalent in education politics.
