There was a bit of a buzz around the New York City edublogging community yesterday, about a Daily News article that appeared and then quickly disappeared from the internet.
Elizabeth Green at Gotham Schools reported that the story was supposed to run both in print and online, but was quickly pulled. She explains that the article which was entitled, Parents slam fat cat lives of Joel Klein, other Education Department officials, seems to have been removed as the result of 'outside intervention'.
Several bloggers picked up on the story, and the parent blog, NYC Public School Parents posted a cached copy on their website. The story discusses the reportedly lavish lifestyles lived by Schools Chancellor Joel Klein and some other top DOE officials, and voices parental concerns that such officials may be 'out of touch' with the realities that New York City families face.
Here is an excerpt from the article:
City schoolkids and their families may be feeling the pinch of hard times, but some top Education Department officials are rolling in dough.
While family income for most kids attending public school is well under six figures, at least five senior DOE advisers had salaries and investments that totaled between $1.7 and $6 million each last year, financial disclosure records show.
Bloggers are speculating about who told the Daily News to pull the article at the last minute.
