Could you wear the same dress every day for a year?
I’ve contemplated this question from time to time. Wearing the same dress for 365 days is the ultimate step in frugal style, but I’m not sure if I’d have the nerve (or the creativity) to do it and not be bored to tears with my outfits by the end of the challenge. But I stumbled upon a person that has decided to do just this: wear the same dress for 365 days.
Through the
Uniform Project , Sheena Matheiken "has pledged to wear one dress for one year as an exercise in sustainable fashion. She has 7 identical dresses, one for each day of the week. Every day Sheena will reinvent the dress with layers, accessories and all kinds of accouterments, the majority of which will be vintage, hand-made, or hand-me-down goodies. The Uniform Project is also a year-long fundraiser for the
Akanksha Foundation, a grassroots movement that is revolutionizing education in India. At the end of the year, all contributions will go toward Akanksha’s School Project." To find out more about the project or to donate, visit her

What are the benefits of doing your own “uniform project”?
- Limited options can force you to be creative with what you have.
- Reduce your conspicuous consumption by shopping for clothes less.
- Lessen closet clutter by not adding more "stuff" to it.
- Save money. You can use the money you save on buying clothes to pay down debt, add to your savings, or donate to worthy causes you support.
Maybe I’ll start with a baby step and just wear the same dress in multiple ways for a week’s time. For now, I’ll just start checking on the inventive ways that Sheena is wearing her dress for the rest of the year.
