Living yoga are not just words, they're a vision. It is also a non-profit organization that offers yoga to those in recovery or in rehabilitation.

Based in Portland, Oregon, Living Yoga provides yoga services to drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers, battered women’s shelters, prisons, low-income and homeless resource services, and disadvantaged youth. As their mission states:
We recognize that the populations we serve have something in common: they are
all imprisoned in some way. Some live behind walls and barbed wire, others in the personal prisons created by addiction and abuse. Some of our students bring
all of these challenges to the yoga mat.”

Living Yoga began in 1998 by Sarahjoy Marsh after teaching yoga for three years at Columbia River Correctional Institution. Volunteers came forward wanting to help and Living Yoga was formed. To date, there are 50 volunteers teaching yoga classes throughout the Portland community.

Those working with Living Yoga hope that their students will be able to be productive citizens in their own lives and in their communities. They are helping people create positive change from the inside out.

It is inspiring to know that people are doing work around their yoga practice that helps manifest significant change in others' lives. If you are interested in volunteering or learning more about Living Yoga, contact them through their website, Living-yoga.org.

If you know of someone or an organization that is doing something extraordinary with their yoga practice, I'd like to write about them. Please contact me at: annetterivlin@gmail.com.
