The Minnesota Twins closed out interleague play for 2009 with a 6-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. The win gave the Twins a 12-6 mark and yet another above-500 interleague mark. More importantly, the win over the Cardinals gave the Twins another series victory on the road. The team is 2-2 in series victories on the current road trip, resulting in a 4-2 mark with a series at Kansas City to follow.
The solid play on the road trip comes despite Justin Morneau's continued struggles. The slugger hit a three-run homer in Sunday's game, but is just 4-22 on the road trip and is hitting .239/.321/.391 in the month of June.
Jason Kubel's hot hitting in June continued with a 3-4 performance on Sunday. Kubel is hitting a solid .316/.393/.684 in June with 5 2B, 8 HR and 17 RBI. Also hot in June is Brendan Harris, who added a 2-run single on Sunday. Harris is batting .307/.348/.376 for the month and has supplanted Nick Punto for the starting shortstop position.
On the hill, things went rather well for the Twins on the road trip. Kevin Slowey struggled during just three innings in Saturday's game, but Francisco Liriano has picked up two wins for the Twins on the road trip. Glen Perkins was spectacular in Friday's matchup in St. Louis, limiting the potent Cardinals' offense to just 4 hits and 1 run over 7 innings. Perkins is 2-1 since coming off the disabled list and has pitched reasonably well in all three of his starts. The Twins' other two starters, Scott Baker and Nick Blackburn, each added quality starts in their efforts on the road trip.
So, interleague play has concluded for another season, and Minnesota is again among the league leaders with a 12-6 mark (Only the LA Angels, Tampa Bay, and Colorado finished with better records). Now, the Twins need to make hay in Kansas City, with a big homestand looming after the completion of the Royals' series. The Twins are set to face the Detroit Tigers, New York Yankees, and the Chicago White Sox set to invade the Metrodome over the next two weeks. If the Twins are to have any opportunity in the AL Central this summer, the next few weeks are absolutely critical.
