Twins announce team awards
The Minnesota Twins announced their 2009 team "Diamond Awards" Monday, and there were few surprises.
-
Calvin Griffith Award (Team MVP) - Joe Mauer = The second year in a row Mauer has won, and it was a no-brainer.
-
Dick Siebert Award (Upper Midwest Player of the Year) - Joe Mauer = Everybody is fine with this
-
Joseph W. Haynes Award (Twins' Pitcher of the Year) - Joe Nathan = Second in a row for Nathan, and no argument here, either.
-
Charles O. Johnson Award (Most Improved Twin) - Michael Cuddyer = Maybe it should have been titled "comeback award?" I'm not sure Cuddyer improved in 2009 as much as he was healthy for the entire season, unlike his miserable, injury-filled 2008 campaign.
-
Bob Allison Award (Determination, Hustle, Tenacity, Competitive Spirit, Leadership, Both on and off the Field) - Michael Cuddyer = Absolutely no argument here.
-
Bill Boni Award (Outstanding Rookie) - Jose Mijares = No issues here, although Jose Morales likely received consideration.
-
Mike Augustin Award (Healthy Relations with Media) - Denard Span
The awards were voted upon by the Twin Cities Chapter of the Baseball Writers' Association of America (BBWAA) and the recipients will be honored in a banquet this coming January.
