The Fargo Force weekend did not turn out how they wanted it to against Youngstown over Halloween weekend. This weekend, the Force made sure they came out and turned the tides. After a dominating performance in a 4-1 win on Friday, Fargo used overtime to trip the Chicago Steel, 3-2, on Saturday.
Mark Anthoine netted the only goal of the first period when he snuck an unassisted goal past Ryan Holfeld. The goal came in the final minute of the first period and it was only the second shot of the game for the Steel. Fargo threw 11 shots on Connor Wilson, but Wilson did not crack in the opening frame.
Nate Condon, who scored on Friday night as well, was the first to get one by Wilson. Nick Oliver and Johnnie Searfoss added assists on the Condon tally. Just minutes later, the daunted Force power play took the ice. Alex Lippincott was the beneficiary of the man-up scenario. He tallied the power play goal with ex-Minnesota Golden Gopher Grant Scott and Corey Leivermann adding assists.
Late in the third period, with the Force on the power play, the Steel were able to steal the equalizer. Greg Wolfe scored shorthanded with just over two minutes to go in the game. At the end of regulation, the score was tied at two and the shots were 23-21 in favor of Fargo.
Chicago tossed the first four shots of overtime. Fargo only needed one. Nate Schmidt sent the hometown fans home happy when he capped off the win with a goal 3:55 into overtime. Leivermann tacked on an assist on the play to pick up his sixth point of the weekend.
Holfeld kicked out 23 shots, including those four key saves in overtime, to pick up his first win with the Force. Wilson was the tough luck loser and kicked out 21 shots for the Steel.
Fargo is now 6-5 on the season and will make the long trip to Indiana to take on the Ice in a rematch of the United States Hockey League Clark Cup Finals from last season. Chicago will host Des Moines on Tuesday night.
