Every time North Dakota State University and St. Cloud State University meet in American Collegiate Hockey Association action, it seems the two teams split the series. Things were no different this weekend when the two clubs squared off in St. Cloud, Minn. The Huskies of St. Cloud State stunned the Bison of NDSU 12 seconds into overtime to win, 3-2, on Friday night. Saturday, NDSU bounces back to down St. Cloud State, 5-3.

Matt Odom started the scoring on the weekend when he scored on a beautiful tip of a Jake Klingbeil shot early in the first period of game one. Garrett Hengstler picked up the second assist for NDSU. About ten minutes later, Justin Friese evened the score for St. Cloud State.

In the middle frame, the Huskies used an early goal to propel them to a 2-1 lead. Garret Bartel’s goal was the lone tally of the second period, and the two teams headed to the third in a one-goal game.
With just over six minutes remaining, the Bison used their daunted power play to tie the game. Corey Arones scored the power play goal for the NDSU power play that is clipping at an over 30% rate. Odom and Hengstler added assists on the goal.

Just 12 seconds into the overtime session, Friese scored his second goal of the game to give St. Cloud State the win.

Eric Monsebroten made 26 saves in his first collegiate start for the Bison. The freshman suffered the loss in his first career decision. Luke Marchiafava kicked out 19 saves to pick up the win for the Huskies.

NDSU bounced back on Halloween night to find a win in St. Cloud. Junior goaltender Tim How stopped 25 shots to pick up his first win of the season or the Bison. Andy Houdek made 35 saves for St. Cloud in the losing effort.

Aaron Iverson got the scoring started for St. Cloud State early in the first period. Tom Keinath pulled the Bison even when he netted his second goal of the season in highlight fashion. After being tripped, Keinath launched the puck over Houdek’s shoulder before falling to the ice.

Matt Osbourne put St. Cloud back in front five minutes into the second period, but once again the Bison answered back. Jay Schulte netted his first career goal to tie the game at two. The power play goal was assisted by Steven Burdick and Andy Dittus. Late in the middle frame, Tony Behl gave St. Cloud the lead once again.

In the third period, after a turnover, somehow the puck ended up on Odom’s stick in front of the net. He made no mistake and buried a goal assisted by Justin Wren and Blair Randall. Arones then netted a power play, game-winning goal. Klingbeil and Shawn Sayler assisted Arones’ second goal of the weekend. Late in the period, Andy Dittus capped off a three goal third period for the Bison with another power play goal. Tyler Swoboda and Mike Schwarz gathered assists.

The Bison move to 2-4 on the season and head to Oklahoma for a trio of tough battles against top ten teams. NDSU will play #8 Oklahoma University on Friday and Saturday and then take on #9 Central Oklahoma on Sunday.
