Over the weekend of November 14th and 15th, Body Awareness Yoga is hosting Ayurveda and Yoga Therapy workshops.
On Saturday, November 14th you’ll be treated to an enlightening workshop presented by traditional Ayurvedic Physician, Janesh Vaidya. Janesh’s mission is to spread his knowledge throughout the world, so those interested can learn to live as healthfully and joyfully as possible. He will illustrate thought provoking ways you can refocus your life by making positive changes in food choices (Ahar), lifestyle practices (Vihar) and thought processes (Vijar), that are unique to your physical and mental constitution.
In India, ‘Vaidya’ is the word used to describe traditional ayurvedic healers and in the past, every Indian village had a Vaidya family to tend to their health and wellbeing. Everyone in a Vaidya family has an ayurvedic-related job: from diagnosing to creating treatment plans, to growing and preparing herbal medications. In fact, the children of the family learn the art and science of healing by helping their elders.
Unfortunately, the influx of modern medicine over the past two centuries has drastically changed the face of traditional medicine in India. Instead of a lifetime of study within a family, one may now go to university, and after 5-6 short years of study, become a “certified” Doctor of Ayurvedic Medicine. Because of this trend, it’s estimated that in southern India there are now only 35 Vaidya families practicing traditional ayurveda.
Janesh was born in Southern India to a family of Ayurvedic Physicians and learned the traditions of yoga and ayurveda throughout his childhood. During his time of “family study” he also developed an interest in Astrology and Philosophy, and now blends these practices in with his ayurvedic consultations. His experience has shown him that by following the wisdom of traditional ayurveda, one can live a more healthy, happy and enlightened life, and he feels it is his privilege to share this wisdom with the world with the added purpose of keeping the tradition alive.
This workshop will be held from 11a-1p at Body Awareness Yoga Center, 9939 Maine Ave. in Lakeside. And while Janesh offers his workshops free of charge, any donation you wish to make will be used to offset Janesh and Maya’s travel expenses.
Please note that space is limited to 30 participants for this event, so RSVP to nancy@bodyawarenessyoga.com ASAP to secure your spot. And on Saturday, please bring a notebook, pen and your inquiring mind to this amazingly informative lecture.
Then, on Sunday, November 15th, Maya, an Ayurvedic Yoga Therapist, will guide you through a Yoga Therapy Workshop from 11a-1p.
Yoga therapy is utilized as a way to adapt traditional yoga poses and practices to fit each individual’s particular needs. Each of us has our own unique mental/physical make-up (dosha). With the help of a yoga therapist, we can create a personalized lifestyle practice to achieve and maintain a healthful way of life.
Maya began her yoga journey in 1999 and has been on the path of study and practice ever since. She has studied with numerous instructors throughout the world and began teaching after earning a teaching degree from Uppsala University in Sweden. In turn, she began offering yoga workshops at the University in order to motivate her colleagues to bring yoga into their own lives and then to pass that inspiration to their students. Maya has even designed yoga therapy workshops for the Swedish National Soccer team to help the players on and off the field.
Please note that this class will be held at the “Jazzercize” studio located at 1089 Broadway in El Cajon. You’re asked to please bring your own yoga mat and blankets (if you require them for comfort) to the session.
This workshop also is offered on a donation basis and is open to practitioners of all levels. The class is limited to 50 participants, so RSVP to nancy@bodyawarenessyoga.com is essential for securing your spot.
