Notice how very few bars have specials on wheatgrass shots? Most bars feature beverages with the word “bombs”. Often our society thinks of cool people as those who indulge in toxins or unhealthy diets. I certainly enjoy chocolate and martinis every so often therefore I’m not here to judge. But how can one be social and dare I say even cool while eating a healthy or allergy-free diet? It’s lonely at the top of the food chain. Here are some tips for healthy eating survival:

  1. Get inspired. Lots of cool people are also straight-edgers (non-drinkers) such as Henry Rollins and Chris Isaak. Also, notice that these men both look young beyond their years. Isaak just turned 53. Check out this former post on celebs who don’t got milk. www.examiner.com/x-8953-Chicago-DairyFree-Food-Examiner~y2009m5d9-Celebrities-Who-D
  2. Know that creativity and talent are the ultimate aspects of “cool”. Just think of your favorite band or singer. You love to watch them rock out. Imagine how boring it would be to watch them eat a bunch of fatty food on stage or drink an entire bottle of Jack Daniels.
  3. Be a little vain. Those who eat healthier often look better. Chicago’s own Karyn Calabrese is dairy free as a long time raw vegan and looks amazing at 61. www.karynraw.com/About-Karyn
  4. Indulge in non-food "treats". Interests and hobbies can really distract one from couch potato behavior. Reading, journaling, practicing yoga, etc. Ask yourself: what FEEDS your soul or imagination?
  5. Get support. Join a healthy eater’s club or allergy support group such as ellfoundation.org. Also, Nutrition Diva, Monica Reinagel, has inspiring podcasts every week as well as plenty of folks to talk as you follow her on Facebook or Twitter. nutritiondiva.quickanddirtytips.com

I’m not a raw foodist but I love what raw food guru David Wolfe has to say, "Proper nutrition is an art. It is an art form. Every bite is a brush stroke. Every swallow is a new color. Each meal is a cloud or a tree or a flower a piece of the beautiful painting that you are becoming. You are becoming an ever more attractive work of art each day. You truly are a work of art in progress.”
