
FAAN’s is having a Teen Summit, Nov. 13-15 in Arlington, Va., this event allows teens, aged 11 to 21, to come together to discuss their special issues. Peer pressure is at an all-time high during teen years and having food allergies does not it make it any easier.
Additionally, research has indicated that teens frequently fail to take their medication along when engaging in certain activities. 94% say they carry it when traveling, only 43% bring it along when playing sports. Almost a third leave it at home when attending a school dance or going to a friend's house. Wearing tight clothes is one issue teens have with carrying their medications. But some companies do make holsters or hipper epi-pen cases such as those made by Allergy Haven.
Kissing is another issue for food allergic teens and young adults. One suggestion is that their partners should avoid eating serious allergens. They should also wash their hands and face and brush their teeth carefully. Teens should always wear emergency medical indentification bracelets, and luckily there are some cool ones out there:
