Biologist, atheist and popular British science author
Richard Dawkins is scheduled to be a guest on the HBO program
Real Time With Bill Maher this Friday, Oct. 2nd. Prof. Dawkins, who has been called "Darwin's Rottweiler" (like 19th century scientist Thomas Huxley, who was called "Darwin's Bulldog") for his fierce defense of the theory of evolution, will likely be promoting his new book,
The Greatest Show on Earth: The Evidence for Evolution as well as talking about current events from his own perspective.
Directly after taping the show, Richard Dawkins and Bill Maher will be hopping into a limo and driving over to the Atheist Alliance International convention where the former will present the latter with the
2009 Richard Dawkins Award which has been given annually since 2003
"to honor an outstanding atheist whose contributions raise public awareness of the nontheist life stance; who through writings, media, the arts, film, and/or the stage advocates increased scientific knowledge; who through work or by example teaches acceptance of the nontheist philosophy; and whose public posture mirrors the uncompromising nontheist life stance of Dr. Richard Dawkins."
Bill Maher is being honored for his production of the popular film, Religulous, which was a satirical look at religion. Previous award winners were the magician James Randi (2003), author and media producer Ann Druyan (2004), magicians Penn and Teller (2005), comedienne Julia Sweeney (2006), philosopher Daniel Dennett (2007) and author, feminist and former Dutch parliamentarian, Ayaan Hirsi Ali (2008).
The Atheist Alliance International 2009 convention is being held in the Los Angeles area, Oct. 2-4. Information about the events scheduled and attendance can be found
