The First Glance Film Festival started in 1996 as a way for independent filmmakers to get their films shown to the public. The Festival has been so successful that they even created a second online film festival.

This year, one of the online films nominated is a documentary film called, The Tree of Knowledge. It documents the efforts of the Freethought Society of Greater Philadelphia. Last December, they organization put up a winter display in the Free Speech Zone outside the Chester County Courthouse in West Chester, PA. This display would go next to the Jesus Crèche, The Christmas Tree, and the Jewish Menorah.

The atheist display was the Tree of Knowledge. It was an evergreen tree decorated with laminated book covers of science, philosophy, morality, humanism, atheism, and yes even the Bible and the Koran. Their message was that people should metaphorically eat from the Tree of Knowledge and that the book covers represented the actual books (which due to the laws of physics would be unable to actually hang on the tree). A book list was available on the Freethought Society’s website.

The documentary directed by Gregory Walsh was a balanced film which interviewed not only some of the atheists involved in the project, but also the former Chester County commissioner whose religious group sponsors the Jesus Crèche every year. There were also a few street interviews of people with various and mixed opinions. This author was also featured in the film having a philosophical conversation with fellow Philadelphia Examiner.

The general public can view all the films online and rate them on a scale of one through five. Registration is required, but it is free of cost. Films can be viewed on the First Glance website.
