Christian fundamentalist group, “The Way of The Master” also known as “Living Water Ministries” will be giving away free copies of Charles Darwin’s groundbreaking book The Origin of Species. This group will be going to 50 of the top Universities around the nation on November 19th (two days before the anniversary of the book’s publication) and distributing this text.
There is of course a catch. Fundamentalist Christians love to have a catch. Included as part of the book, will be a 50-page rant by the group’s leader, Ray Comfort. The supplemental rant talks about how Hitler believed in Evolution, Comfort’s poor attempts to criticize the theory of evolution, the Argument by Design, the First Cause Argument, and how all the other religious in the world suck. It should be noted that Comfort’s attempts to find errors with the theory of evolution through natural selection just show his incredibly poor understanding of the theory and how science works.
Comfort then uses his signature fear speech. He actually says, “Remember to let fear work for you.” Here he talks about how we are all going to die and if you don’t believe in his God his way, you will be tortured for al eternity in Hell fire by his loving and compassionate deity. He urges his reader to choose their religion fearfully. His religion is right and if you disagree, you will be punished.
This style of tricking people into religion isn’t new to Ray Comfort or his partner Mike Seaver from 80’s television show Growing Pains, Kirk Cameron. The couple often travels together to spring break hot spots to trick drunken college students into believing in their brand of Christianity or be tortured for all eternity with reruns of Growing Pains.
Some atheist college groups are encouraging people to take the “free” gift of the book, The Origin of Species and to just rip out the Comfort attachment. Some atheists have started to talk about giving away a free copy of the Bible with a "special introduction," but that introduction would probably be longer then 50 pages if it is to point out all the atrocities committed in the name of the Biblical God and point out all the horrific morals that the Bible contains and promotes. I don’t really think that such a project will take place.
I should point out that Creationism (i.e. Intelligent Design) has had its day in court and the Republican Judge ruled that it is not science and had a pretty scathing opinion of the Creationist side. You can read his rather lengthy opinion here.
